The Healing of a Man Born Blind

The Healing of a Man Born Blind
John 9:1-41
3"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. 4As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

Note:

In the story, God's work was displayed because
  1. there is a man who was in need
  2. there is a man who did the work of God

Application:
  1. Don't be self-pity or complain when we're in the unfavorable situation. We should seek God and not be ashamed of getting help so that God's work may be displayed.
  2. Do our best to do God' work. We couldn't do much when the opportunity slipped away.

--------------------
6Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man's eyes. 7"Go," he told him, "wash in the Pool of Siloam" (this word means Sent). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing.

Note:
  • "Go, wash in the Pool of Siloam". Jesus' instruction to the blind man is very simple. He didn't even tell the blind man what exactly would happen after washing. The blind man followed the instruction and gained the vision.

Application:

  1. God has given us a lot of "simple instructions" (e.g. Respect/honor your parents, love your neighbor, etc...) How many of them do we really keep in mind and carry out?
  2. Do we have the faith to follow God's "instruction / teachings" even God hasn't promised any results?

---------------------

2His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" 3"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. 4As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

Note:
  • The disciples were interested in / had their focus on finding out who had sinned. However, Jesus was interested in / had his focus on doing God's work.

Application:
  • We usually pinpoint the 過錯 of our brothers and sisters, but how often we really focus on how we can help them to correct their 過錯, 挽回 them, and we can encourage / accept them when they 回轉?

---------------------

20"We know he is our son," the parents answered, "and we know he was born blind. 21But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don't know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself." 22His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for already the Jews had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue. 23That was why his parents said, "He is of age; ask him."

Note:
  • The parents of the blind man were afraid of standing for Jesus.

Application:
  • Are we bold enough to stand for Jesus (like the blind man) / God / our religion in all situations?

---------------------

25He replied, "Whether he is a sinner or not, I don't know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!" 26Then they asked him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" 27He answered, "I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?"

Note:

  • The blind man's life has been changed by the act of Jesus. On the other hand, the Pharisees refused Jesus even they've seen the evidence of the act of Jesus. The blind man had the "faith" in Jesus even he was not 100% sure He was "Christ". However, the Pharisees refused to put their "faith" in Him.

Application:
  • God has done so many acts on us and we have seen so many God's acts being done on the other people. Do we still turn our eyes away from God? Do we still hesitate to put ALL our faith in God?

--------------------

34To this they replied, "You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!" And they threw him out. 35Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"

Note:

  • After the blind man was "thrown out", Jesus remembered him.

Application (encouragement):

  • Jesus will remember us when we stand for Him.

-------------------

See how the blind man knew about Jesus more and more...

14 The man they call Jesus (The blind man just knew His name)
17 He is a prophet (The blind man knew He's not an ordinary man)
30 the godly man (The blind man claimed He's the man from God)
38 Lord, I believe (The blind man realized He's the Lord and the son of God)

Note:

  • The man was able to keep his faith and consistently faced the unfavorable situations from the Pharisees and Jews, so that he knew about Jesus more and more.

Application:

  • Do we give up our faith easily (Do we keep our faith consistently) when we face the unfavorable situations?
