小組 Small Groups

who, what, where, when, why, how

Students' Group 學生組
  • We are a group of college / university students studying in Calgary. Most of us are international students from Hong Kong, China and Taiwan. Some of us are local Calgarians with Chinese parents. We speak Cantonese and English and some Mandarin.
  • In additional to our weekly Friday gatherings at SCCEFC, we meet every month usually on Saturday/Sunday nights.
  • We usually meet in one of our group member's homes - rides will be arranged
  • We realize it is lonely to be studying in college / university especially when you're not in your home country. It is also physically and emotionally demanding, so we'd like to gather regular to support one another and discover who God is and what is He doing in our lives. We meet to have dinner, update what happened last few weeks, talk about our dreams, and help people who are in need.
  • Yes, we'll be thrill to have you join us. For more information, contact our coordinators Jerria at journeystudents@sccefc.ca or William at journeystudents@sccefc.ca
Outreach and Caring
  • Yes, still taking group members. Contact Maggie at
  1. Making Disciples - Use a non-traditional concept to cultivate the spirituality of the new generation
  2. Reaching Beyond - Be a group of Christian that go out and care about our community
  3. Growing Deep - Through relaxed, lively, non-traditional methods, to learn and practice God's words
  4. Let a group of brothers and sisters, who share common ideas / passions to support and grow with each other
  • We are accepting limited number of new members. Please reach out to one of our group members if you are interested.
The Bridge
  • Small Group Goals
    • Through inviting different brothers and sisters to our group gathering;
      1. People will have more opportunity to know others outside of their small group
      2. People who haven't join any group can still enjoy small group environment
      3. Enhance unity and bonding of Journey Fellowship
  • For our permanent (active) group members;
    1. Be more proactive and learn how to communicate with other people in this fellowship
    2. Share our recent life stories and spiritual concerns/questions among our small group members
    3. Have a spiritual growth by telling our own stories and listening to other people sharing
  • Small Group Culture & Activities
    1. Ideally this small group will be gathered bi-weekly, one for active members only and one for joint gathering
    2. This small group atmosphere will be toward fun and relax so that people can ‘loosen-up’ and willing to share
    3. From group activities to the invitation list, we decide everything as a group. Everyone is a leader in this group, all as one
    4. Gathering activities could be as simple as home gathering, movie night or a bit more exciting activities such as shopping together or hiking. It depends on who we invite and our group members preferences

Cell Group Member
Pledge of Commitment

Journey Fellowship
2011-2012
  1. I pledge that I share the vision of Journey cell groups as a place to grow spiritually, to cultivate loving relationships, and to welcome new members of the Journey Fellowship. I will do my best to prevent cell group activities from degrading into mere social gatherings.

  2. I pledge to take my participation in cell groups as a ministry to build the Kingdom of God, with the understanding that an objective is to build up the group so that within 2 years it can be multiplied into two groups. To this end, I pledge to venture outside my comfort zone, and to welcome new comers into the group when opportunities arise.

  3. I pledge that I come to my cell group not as a spectator, but as a fellow soldier of King Jesus. I pledge that I will do my best to participate, to contribute, and to collaborate, because I am not in the group to be entertained, but to serve. As a minimal token of my commitment, I pledge to attend at least 60% of the regular Friday cell group meetings.

  4. I pledge to learn to build deeply loving and mutually nurturing relationships with the fellow members of my group. This means, together with my fellow group members, I am committed to respect, to accept, and to forgive one another. Fully aware that it is frightening to be vulnerable, I still pledge to open myself to my group, and to be authentic in front of my fellow group members. At the same time, I am committed to make the group a safe place for sharing, by learning to listen with a sensitive ear, to speak truth in love, and to keep strict confidence in personal matters of others.

Activity

Every 2nd Friday of the month

From March 2008 on, we will be introducing a new Activity format with different topics each month.

Goal:
  • Understand different levels of relationship.
  • Understand which level my cell group is in.
  • Determine to grow to the next level.
Schedule:
  • Each group prepares its own presentation (10 mins)
  • Get together and do the presentations. Each group has 2 mins to present. (14 mins)
  • Anthony, Lucia or Eddie will have a few questions to ask the groups. (a few mins)
  1. What are the characteristics of a certain level of relationship?
  2. What "elements" does a certain level of relationship lack of when it is being compared with the next higher level?
  • Anthony, Lucia or Eddie will briefly explain the 5 levels of relationships with examples. Then one or two bible verses to conclude how important we need to have God involved in our cell group. (a few mins)
  1. Level 1 - Common background
e.g. Pastor Isaac and I go to the same church, but we rarely have any interaction.
  2. Level 2 - 社交
e.g. We get together once a while or regularly because we have common interests/hobbies or something in common.
  3. Level 3 - 深交
e.g. We can share our personal feelings.
  4. Level 4 - 親暱
e.g. We can share our struggles and weaknesses.
  5. Level 5 -
e.g. We share freely. We trust each other. We care about the spiritual needs or growth of each other. I feel your pain when you get hurt.
  • Divide into different groups again.
  1. Discuss which level your cell group is in.
  2. Discuss which level your cell group will be in after 6 months and what your group will do to achieve this.
Things to do:
  • Randomly pick 5 items from your home and bring them with you to the fellowship.

Sharing
:

Stock Market
There will be 2 stations: 1 station will be by the door to let players stamp their
own time sheet. 1 will be for investing.
For investing:
- each 5 minute will be able to open/close market twice (depends on timing).
- each lot is $100 minimum and on an increment of $100 (this number can be
changed if the salary is really high)
- stock #6 will be called a Diversified Portfolio, which return is equal to the
average of the 5 stocks. To help promote the idea of diversification, and avoid
some "smart" investors investing in all 5 stocks (more transactions to process).
- investment returns will be determined before Friday. Stock names will be given
as well.
- each day, I will send 1 person to the hospital from my station. every other day,
victim will be random. the other days, it'll be the craziest investor (stroke from
heart disease). Is Grace's station sending AIDS ppl to the hospital? hehe.
Materials needed:
- $ ... a lot of it.
- Tables. 2 long ones for investing and 1 short one for time stamp. 1 short one to
keep MY cash. and the rest of my materials.
- white board with marker for market price
- Cardboard (6) to identify what they are investing in (Ivan)
- Go To Hospital cards (10)
- Big Banner for the station. SCCEFC: South Calgary Cash Exchange For
Chinese. HAHAHA.

Table
Interval/Stock 1 2 3 4 5 6
1 0%
2 0%
...

Casino
I will only play over-under or "Sam-Gown". 1 to 1 return.

Materials needed:
1. Money
2. poker cards (will bring my own)
3. instead of using hospital card as Ivan does, I will use a special check (like a cross or a star) on the casino column to show people are addicited gamblers. ...will also determine some special cases. Please be noticed that they might cheat. haha
4. Each day (5 mins) I check once (normal one, like a dash) in their cards; only people who consecutively gamble 5 times will be asked to go have treatment in Cat's hospital.

Family Planning
For the wedding/family planning, I will provide 3 services

1) Matchmaking: $100 to find a date

2) The couple needs to come back with $1000 to get married
==> I will prepare some marriage certificate for them
3) If they want to have kids, $800 for the 1st one, $500 for the 2nd one.

Introduction by Uncle Kenny (5-10 minutes)
  • Briefly explain what are 宣教 and 短宣?
Cell group sharing (back to Room 100 at 8:50pm SHARP!!)
Please focus on the two questions above. Please feel free to "twist" the questions a little bit if necessary. In case your group members don't have much to share, there're a few "side dish" questions if you have time.
Why?
Conclusion by Uncle Kenny (10-15 minutes)
  • Address some common misunderstandings about mission ministry (宣教, 短宣, etc...).
  • Answer some questions we may have during the group sharing.
  • How does mission ministry relate to us? How can we get ourselves involved in it other than just praying or joining the short term mission teams?
Cell group prayer meetings (hopefully, we can start at 9:10pm)

Goals:
  • Bring the interest and awareness about mission ministry to the groups.
  • Clarify some wrong concepts about mission ministry we may have.
Leaders/Co-leaders, here're some misunderstandings and questions your group members may have. Please don't spend too much time to explain and clarify. Just let them speak and share. Uncle Kenny will cover most of them and answer our questions.
  • Short term mission is a just a one-time business, activity or trip.
  • Mission is not a must-have ministry. We do it when we have enough fund and resources.
  • Short term mission trip is not cost effective... spending so much money and resources to do little tasks just for 1-2 weeks.
  • We have a lot of local people to deal with, why going oversea?
宣教 is just an "oversea version" of 傳福音.
宣教 is a job, and it's a non-ordinary job like being a pastor, CEO, movie star, prime minister or president which is just NOT FOR ME.
Short term mission is all about "giving". We go to the other country to "give" because we're more blessed and fortunate than the poor people there.
